Did you know that difficulty with absorption and an imbalance in healthy flora in the gut can cause food sensitivities, fatigue, skin rashes, and migraine headaches among other symptoms?

Published research has listed dysbiosis, a microbial imbalance, as the cause of arthritis, autoimmune illness, b12 deficiency, chronic fatigue, cystic acne, the early stages of colon and breast cancer, eczema, food allergy/sensitivity, inflammatory bowel disease, irritable bowel syndrome, and psoriasis.

Constant high levels of stress, exposure to manufactured chemicals, poor food choices, oral contraceptives, surgery, pain killers and, most commonly, the over use of antibiotics all change the healthy balance of bacteria in the digestive tract.

Antibiotics simultaneously kill both harmful and helpful bacteria throughout our digestive system, leaving the territory to bacteria, parasites, viruses, and yeasts that are resistant to the antibiotic that was used.  These microbes produce toxins that cause negative symptoms such as pain and inflammation.

The most prevalent and obvious form of dysbiosis is a fungal infection known as candida.  Found in small amount in healthy bodies, candida is usually kept in check by friendly flora, by our immune system and by proper intestinal pH levels.

Symptoms candida overgrowth include abdominal bloating, anxiety, constipation, diarrhea, depression, environmental sensitivities, fatigue, feeling worse on damp or muggy days or in moldy places, food sensitivities, fuzzy thinking, insomnia, low blood sugar, mood swings, premenstrual syndrome, recurring vaginal or bladder infections, ringing in the ears, and sensitivities to perfume, cigarettes, or fabric odors.

Candida infections are usually triggered by use of antibiotics, birth control pills, steroid medications and consumption of sugar.  These drugs change the balance of the intestinal tract, kill the bacteria that keep candida in check and the fungus quickly takes hold.

Candida product toxins that can also cause negative symptoms leading to leaky gut and food allergies.

Greater number of candida also produce greater amounts of toxins, which further irritate and break down the intestinal lining.  This damage allows macromolecules of partially digested food to pass through (i.e. leaky gut syndrome).  Your immune system then goes on alert for these specific foods so the next time you eat them, your antibodies will be waiting!  The net result is increased sensitivity to foods and other food substances and the environment.

What to do

Refrain from consuming alcoholic beverages, dried fruits, flours, grains, mushrooms, sugar, vinegar and yeasted breads for at least 3 weeks.  Then reintroduce foods one at a time to test for reactions.  Adding fiber supplements and probiotics is also important to normalize and restore the gut. (*Note:  take probiotics well after fiber supplement to avoid the "good" bacteria from being swept away.)

Herxheimer reaction - feeling worse before feeling better.

When the candida are killed, the protein fragments and endotoxins released trigger an antibody response.  This can initially produce a worsening of the person's symptoms and is commonly known as a die-off reaction, or a Herxheimer reaction.  Therefore, begin any home remedies gently with small doses and gradually increase.  Most people feel dramatically better within two weeks.

Additional Ways to Restore Your Gut Integrity
  • Replenish your "good" bacterial flora with probiotics and by adding fermented foods, such as sauerkraut, kimchee and kefir to your diet.
  • Support your digestive tract with digestive enzymes and chew your food well and slowly.
  • Eat more fiber, fresh fruit and vegetables and eliminate processed foods.  Poor food choices contribute to an imbalance of gut pH and an imbalance of good-bad bacteria in the gut.
  • Reduce daily exposure to household and environmental chemicals.
  • Reduce stress with daily meditation, relaxation and exercise.
  • Use home remedies to heal the gut and rid your body of candida.
